The Program: An evening of Classic German Folksongs
Franz Liszt’s Transcriptions of Franz Schubert’s original arrangements

The music explores the emotions and feelings of the poetry and folksong of the German Romantic period. Well-known melodies, such as “Unter dem Lindenbaum” and “Ave Maria” describe the nostalgia of this time. Other stories, such as Lessing’s Erlkönig, came out of the stormy German Enlightenment. The scenes range from the playful trout of “Die Forelle”, jumping and darting through a babbling stream, to the poignant tolling of the death knell in “Der Sterbenglocklein” that bids a town to come and say farewell.

These songs and themes fascinated Schubert, who arranged them in his famous classic songs for piano and voice. Captured by their incredible beauty, Liszt, following the trend of transcription-writing in his day, arranged these pieces into virtuoso piano works. Originally written for vocals with a simple piano accompaniment, he replaced the human voice with refined dynamic phrases, trusting in his excellent sense of tone and his knowledge of the versatility of his instrument. Held at the old stock exchange in Leipzig, Die Alte Handelsbörse, the setting is reminiscent of the smaller, authentic music salons of the Baroque period. It is an ideal place for Alexander Paley, the master pianist, to paint these musical scenes.
